The idea of establishing a regional museum on Mandø is old. But when Niels Peder Hede wanted to demolish his house to build a new one on the site, a group of interested people saw the possibility of creating a museum on the locality.
It was the best-preserved house on Mandø, and Niels Peder Hede agreed in selling, on conditions that this historic building was turned into a museum.
The association "Mandøhuset" has from the beginning met great interest and support from locals and others, who from time to time have donated furniture, ship's models, pictures, notes, "stories" etc.. In that way the shipmaster's house represents a worth seeing historical documentary of the maritime period, and life on Mandø from 1800 and onwards.
